1. Introduction

This cookbook enables instrument providers to create DataCite DOIs as persistent identifiers (PID) for instruments. DataCite is a global not-for-profit organization that provides DOIs for research data and other research outputs. The Persistent Identification of Instruments WG (PIDINST) has worked with DataCite on the mapping of the PIDINST metadata schema onto the DataCite schema.

This cookbook is not intended to replace the DataCite documentation. It will rather point to the relevant steps for minting an instrument DOI and mostly concentrate on the instrument PID metadata. The cookbook assumes some basic knowledge about DOIs. The Wikipedia article on DOI is a useful primer containing the relevant information.
